European Alps Trilogy Itinerary


Mont Blanc (15,774 ft)
The Matterhorn (14,693 ft)
The Eiger(14,600 ft)
12 days

Day 0:
We meet in the evening at our hotel in Chamonix.


Day 1:
Warm up climb in the Chamonix area, probably in the Aiguille Rouge area. Overnight in town.


Day 2:
Another climb in Chamonix to further our acclimating, probably the classic Cosmiques Arete on the Aiguille du Midi. Overnight in town.


Day 3:
Travel to the Hut on Mont Blanc which involves some rock scrambling. Overnight at the hut.


Day 4:
Summit attempt of Mont Blanc via either the Trois Sommets Traverse or the normal Gouter Route, depending upon conditions and group goals. There are spectacular views from the top of Western Europe. This is a long day as we descend all the way back to Chamonix. Overnight in town.


Day 5:
Relax and rest in Chamonix/weather day in case we need an extra day for Mont Blanc. Evening in Chamonix.


Day 6:
Travel by train in the morning to Zermatt. Overnight in Zermatt


Day 7:
Training for the Matterhorn via a day climb of the Breithorn via a knife-edge technical, mixed ridge traverse or alpine rock rock climbing on the Riffelhorn. Overnight in Zermatt.


Day 8:
Travel to the Matterhornhutte (Hornli Hut) in the afternoon. Overnight at the hut.


Day 9:
Summit attempt of The Matterhorn via the Horni Ridge. Descent back to the Hornli Hut. Overnight at the Hut or all the way back to town depending upon group strength and timing.


Day 10:
Descend to Zermatt and/or Travel by train to Grindelwald, under the shawdow of the North Face of The Eiger. Overnight in town.

Day 11:
Travel up the Jungraujoch Railway through that tunnels through the middle of the Eiger to the Esimeer where we exit via tunnels to the East Face and onto the Glacier. After some easy technical rock climbing and scrambling, we arrive at the spectacular Mittellegihutte on the Eiger's North Ridge. Overnight at the hut.


Day 12:
Climb the Eiger via the Mittellegi Ridge and then traverse the South Ridge to the Eigerjoch Col and eventually back to the Jungfraujoch station where the train takes us back to Grindenwald. Celebration and overnight in Grindenwald.

On the Alps Trilogy trip everyone is responsible for their own food and lodging. However, CAG/IAG can make all the neccessary hotel, hut and in-country transportation reservations and handle all in-country logistics.
