Mount Shasta

Travel Information

Mt Shasta is California's premier snow and glacier climbing venue. Located just south of the Oregon border in the South Cascades, Mount Shasta towers above all the neighboring landscape. Following is travel information when traveling to the town of Mount Shasta on your Mt Shasta climbing trip.

Travel Directions To Mount Shasta

From Los Angeles, San Fransisco & Sacramento:

Mount Shasta City is located on Interstate 5 approximately 50 miles south of the Oregon border. Driving time from Sacremento, CA. is approximately 4 hours.

From Eastern California & Reno, Nevada:

From Reno, NV. go North on Hwy 395 to the town of Susanville. Continue West on Hwy 36 until the junction with Hwy 44 approx. 8 miles West of Susanville. Turn right on Hwy. 44 and continue approx. 60 miles to the junction of Hwy 89 at Old Station. Turn right on Hwy 89 and continue to Mount Shasta city and the junction of Interstate 5.

Sacramento, CA - 4 hour drive to the South

Medford, OR - 1 1/2 hour drive to the North.

Camping around Mt Shasta

McBride Springs (elevation 4,780 feet)
McBride Springs located at the 5-mile marker about 6 miles from the Bunny Flat trailhead. There are restrooms and drinking water available, and the 9 sites available are surrounded by tall pines and firs. The campground is closed during the winter.

Sand Flat (elevation 6,800 feet)
Another site available for camping is at the Sand Flat trailhead located about a mile below Bunny Flat. There are two parking lots each a mile apart and both have a dirt road which form a loop. During the summer, the Flat makes for an excellent overnight camp. Right around 7000 ft it is a great spot for acclimating before your climb. It can be snowed in before late June.

Groceries/Supplies

Mount Shasta Supermarket
A small, local supermarket with just about everything you'll need. This store makes excellent sandwiches to take up on the mountain. Located on the North end of town at 112 E Alma St.
