Sierra Nevada Ski Mountaineering
Sawtooth Range, High Sierra - 4 days

Ready to take your backcountry skiing to the next level? This comprehensive backcountry ski mountaineering course combines backcountry skiing with mountaineering to get you higher into the more alpine ski terrain. Learn to ski couloirs, steeps and wide open glaciers. We also cover technical mountaineering techniques as they apply to skiing big peaks.

We base ourselves high in the Sawtooth Ridge area in California's Northern High Sierra. We establish a comfortable base camp at the base of countless ski lines, couloirs and mountaineering objectives.

Ski mountaineering instruction covered:

  • Skiing Steeps & Couloirs
  • Snow Anchors, Ropework & Rappeling
  • Ice Ax and Boot Crampon use
  • Crevasse Rescue on Skis
  • Navigation & Route Planning
  • Snowpack Stability Evaluation

Taught by UIAGM/IFMGA internationally certified ski mountaineering guide and CAG owner Dave Miller. Dave has a history of being a full time ski racer and has over 35 years of skiing experience including ski mountaineering and guiding experience throughout the Western US, Alaska and the European Alps.

Location: Hoover Wildernesst, California, East Side of the Sierra Nevada. Only 4 1/2 hours from the S.F. Bay Area and and one hour north of the resort town of Mammoth Lakes.

Prerequisites: Advanced level skiers with some previous backcountry skiing experience. Good physical condition and the ability to carry an overnight pack all day on skis.
